The Great-Eight
"It’s one thing to have one good dog in a lifetime, and I've been lucky enough to have had several" he says reminiscing of the numerous good to great ranch-using and trial dogs he has produced. "Not all make great cattle dogs" he goes on to explain, "some are more tenacious than others and it’s tenacity that is the common thread amongst the best. There's a great deal of stress in the face of a momma cow that's protecting her calf. If that dog can get her to yield and break eye contact, often the battle is won." He admits seeing a dogs’ level of tenacity on cattle is not easy to spot until the dog is old enough to reflect its true working ethics, somewhere around 18 months of age.
Roger strives for a canine athlete that is mentally strong, can endure the mental and physical stress of the work load of dealing with animals several times in size. He is partial to the Kelpie, a hybrid breed that has originated from Australia. In his opinion, they "are the superior breed." The attributes he finds valuable in Kelpies are good feet, ability to work and travel in diverse conditions, independent thinkers, and good companions. His dogs embody those traits.
"It takes a strong minded human to appreciate a strong minded dog" could be an understated quote in regards to Roger and his dogs!
