Started Working Cattle Dogs for Sale
On occasion, available prospects are for sale from Urricelqui Ranch Kelpies. Most often, these will be started dogs. Many ask what constitutes a Started Dog? This is a young dog old enough to reflect its true work ethics, about 18 months old. At this age, the prospect should reflect its working preferences; know its name and be able to be called off the cattle; can get ahead and stop cattle; and has a solid "down" command. Prices typically start at $1500. Please feel free to email via the contact page on this site for more information.
One of the key appeals of purchasing a started, or trained dog, is that dog is ready to go. Most ranchers do not have the time to build the foundation. Taking a young dog to do a day’s worth of work is like asking a child to be as responsible as a grownup, it can cause wrecks that take hours to fix. Often the true cowman or woman has the job of processing cattle, not training a pup. Purchasing a started dog with basic skills set is time and money ahead. There is no guarantee with the outcome of selling puppies, and rarely will puppies be offered for sale.
